Grant to develop cheap fuel cells
Scientists are developing a version of an environmentally-friendly technology which may be used to power cars and laptops, it was announced.
Researchers at the University of Aberdeen have been given nearly £300,000 to create cheaper and lower temperature fuel cells.
The cells, which convert fuel to electricity without the need for combustion, are on the verge of entering the market.
Hydrogen is the main component but, as it is mainly produced from fossil fuels, it contains carbon impurities.
These impurities form carbon monoxide which can clog up part of the cell, making it less efficient in producing energy.
The university's chemistry department is trying to develop "carbon-tolerant" fuel cells.
It is hoped their creation can lead to the technology being introduced quicker than expected.
Project leader Dr Angela Kruth said: "The aim is to create a new type of low-temperature fuel cell which is able to deal with carbon monoxide better than those about to enter the market - and as a result is cheaper and more efficient in producing electricity.
"Our research will develop ways in which the fuel cell can better cope with the carbon monoxide found in the fuel which it is converting into power.
"The new low-temperature fuel cell will be able to use carbon-containing fuels directly and is expected to drastically accelerate fuel cell technology breakthrough into the current market."
