One of the highlights of yesterday’s Green Car Day at City Hall in Central London was the appearance of the Nissan X-Trail Fuel Cell Vehicle.
The car is part of Nissan’s fleet participating in the California Fuel Cell Partnership trials in the USA and has featured in a wide variety of low carbon events throughout Europe. Its appearance at the event was seen as symbolic of the growth of the UK infrastructure for low carbon mobility with Britain having made strides in recent months thanks to the work of organisations, local and national government, academic institutions and more.
The plan for the Renault-Nissan Alliance is to introduce zero emission vehicles in the USA and Japan beginning with electric cars from 2010 onwards. It then hopes to take leadership in zero emission mobility and start mass marketing electric cars globally by 2012.
Currently, the Alliance has two agreements in Europe with Portugal and the Principality of Monaco. These agreements form concrete proposals ranging from education programmes to incentives and infrastructures.
Its fuel cell vehicle work is considered more of a long term project. It includes the plan to release a newer generation fuel cell vehicle in the 2010s and Nissan is currently developing a third generation of its proprietary fuel cell stack that includes greater power, weight reduction and increased longevity. |
