Lincon Wire Feed Welder - Wire not feeding well

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello All,
I've had the Wire Feed Welder for two years. I've built Soccer and Lacrosse goals, and fixed things around the house but have not used it on a regular basis.

I got excited to weld again beause I rented a video from SmartFlix about wire feed welding.

My problem is the wire is not feeding as consistently as it used too. I checked to make sure the tention on the wire feed wheel was tight and saw slight corrosion on the wire on the spool. The corrosion is visible only on small areas about 1/8 or 1/4 of an inch long, about half the way around the wire. I am ***guessing*** this is my problem, the rusty spots are binding in the wire feed hose. Anyone care to confirm?

Should I be putting some lubricant in the wire feed hose? Some type of dry lubricant like graphite? I have never hear of anything and I have not see anything in the manual (yes, I read those things).

Thanks for any help,
E

I wouldn't. You don't want lubricant making its way to the steel contaminating it. I'd buy another roll of wire, it isn't that expensive, and fixing bad welds is less cost effective. I doubt the rust is binding, but build up enough of it, and it could be a problem.
Good luck,
Ken

Thanks for the reply. I thought putting lubricant in there was a bad idea.

Lubrication specifically sold at Welding supply stores should solve your problem. It will lube the liner in the leed more then stick to the wire itself. It's also possible that your liner is bad. You can call Mahany Welding Supply located in Rochester NY and ask for Ted. 585-271-0870
